      Content:

When you are shopping for towels, you might see a number like “550GSM” on the label. But what does it actually mean? And why should you care?

      What is GSM?

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It measures the density of the fabric — specifically, how many grams of material are in one square meter of towel.

Generally, higher GSM means thicker, more absorbent, and more plush towels. “What is the GSM of the towel?” says Raman Kia, founder and CEO of Havly Towels. “It’s the most important thing about the towel that no one knows. The higher it is, the towels are going to feel more fluffy and absorb more water”.

      The GSM spectrum explained

      • 300-400 GSM: Lightweight, quick-drying, less plush. Good for guest bathrooms, gym towels, or travel.

      • 400-550 GSM: Good balance of absorbency and drying time. Suitable for everyday family use.

      • 550-700 GSM: Premium range — plush, absorbent, yet still breathable. This is the sweet spot for most homes.

      • 700+ GSM: Very thick, highly absorbent, luxurious feel. The downside: they take longer to dry and can feel heavy.

Why 550GSM is the “Goldilocks” choice

A plush towel is wonderful, but if it takes 12 hours to dry, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and musty odors. SEMAXE chose 550GSM as the ideal weight — soft and cushiony without the heavy, soggy downside.

      GSM is not everything

GSM alone does not tell the whole story. A lower-GSM towel made from premium long-staple cotton can actually feel softer and perform better than a higher-GSM towel made from short, low-quality fibers. GSM is about density and weight, not inherent fiber quality.

What GSM is best for you?

      • Family bathroom: 500-600 GSM — durable and practical

      • Master bathroom: 600-700 GSM — luxurious and plush

      • Guest bathroom: 400-500 GSM — nice but quick-drying

      • Gym/travel: 300-400 GSM — lightweight and fast-drying

      • Kids: 400-500 GSM — easy for small hands to manage

      SEMAXE’s GSM choice

SEMAXE towels are crafted at 550GSM — the perfect balance of plushness and practicality. You get the soft, cushiony feel of a premium towel without the heavy, slow-drying drawbacks of higher GSM towels.

      Key Takeaways:

      • GSM = Grams per Square Meter — measures towel density

      • Higher GSM = thicker, more absorbent, more plush

      • 550GSM is the ideal balance for most homes

      • GSM alone doesn’t guarantee quality — fiber type matters too

      • Choose GSM based on how you will use the towel
